Survival needs of a living organism
Survival needs of living organisms: All organisms need to fulfill the following needs in order to survive.
Water: All living things need water because humans need water to survive. For example, if humans need water. If we don’t have water, we would only live for a few days. Some animals have adapted to live in different environments. For example, some plants like the cactus can store moisture in their stems or leaves so they do not need to water them as often. Animals like the camel, have also adapted to the desert. The camel does not lost water from sweating or panting. It will drink large amounts of water all at once and then can survive without water for 2 weeks. Air: All organisms need air. For instance, organisms that live on land get their oxygen from the air. Aquatic organisms get oxygen from the water. Some marine animals will come to the surface for air. On the other hand, green plants will use carbon dioxide, water and sunlight to make food. Habitat: Living organisms need a place to live. We call an organism’s living place its habitat. A habitat can be as simple a nest on a tree, under a rock at the beach, or an isolated mountaintop. When an organism has living space, and also the right living conditions like nutrients and energy, water, air, and temperature they will survive. In nature, organisms share their habitats. For example, the pond is a shared habitat for many plants, animals, and other insects. Food: Living things need food to survive. Food provides organisms with the needed energy is needed for it to grow, reproduce, move, and to work. Food contains nutrients for the organism to grow and develop. Think of what will happen if you stayed for three days without food. Different organisms will use different energy. For example, plants do not eat food, but they will use the Sun’s energy to make their own food from photosynthesis. For example, spiders eat other bugs to survive. Humans eat will eat both meat and vegetables to live. Most important of all, the sun’s energy is transferred because the energy is passed from one living thing to another. Sunlight: This is probably the most important need for all living organisms, because it is the source of all energy. It also provides heat for plants and animals A Habitat with the Right Temperature: Too cold or too hot? Every living organism needs the ideal temperature to survive either on land or in water. |
